Work
1. Get a paid writing gig (not a one-off publish).
2. Get paid to publish something in a book or magazine.
3. Never miss a deadline.
4. Be ballsy: interview someone famous. And big. And scary.
5. Collect at least 10 people who can be described as a client base.
6. Go to an average of one networking meet-up per month (and meet new people there!).
7. Register as self-employed by...

Two Core Questions
… thirty years of research has identified the following three traits to be crucial if you want a rich life:
Autonomy — control over how you fill your time.
Competence – mastering unambiguously useful things.
Relatedness — feeling of connection to others.

Random Shit On My Desktop: Part II
• Unlucky people often fail to follow their intuition when making a choice, whereas lucky people tend to respect hunches. Lucky people are interested in how they both think and feel about the various options, rather than simply looking at the rational side of the situation. I think this helps them because gut feelings act as an alarm bell - a reason to consider a decision carefully. • ...
Random Shit On My Desktop: Part I
I’m struck by how, except when you’re young, you really need to prioritize in life, figuring out in what order you should divide up your time and energy. If you don’t get that sort of system set by a certain age, you’ll lack focus and your life will be out of balance. I placed the highest priority on the sort of life that lets me focus on writing… I felt that the indispensible relationship I...

twenty-nine.
Last night, Jodie suggested we have Sunday lunch; so we did. Afterwards we took a spontaneous trip to the garden centre — how geriatric are we?! Taro came with us too, but I took this picture while he was in the loo, oops!
The rest of the day has been completely uneventful, but sort-of productive. I finished reading Persepolis, had a look through my Work America paperwork, emailed an old...
twenty-eight.
Today, I cleaned. It was the longest, Sunday-esque-est Saturday ever. Since I’d made my workspace look nice, I decided to take a picture of it. How dull.
I also read most of Persepolis, got a sweet Valentine’s email from my bf (v.romantic, huh? We don’t “do” Valentine’s day though, so it was lovely to get something!), then for the evening the flatmates and I...
twenty-seven.
I’ve been a lurker on all of those organizers and what’s in your bag type groups for quite some time now, but I’ve never taken part. I’m running out of ideas so I figured this was a good time. Plus, I just colour-coded everything!
Today I had lunch with my uni friend, read a lot (Norwegian Wood - 1 chapter to go! & a couple of animation books), and sat on the...
twenty-six.
Duckies! There isn’t an awful lot to photograph up here, but I heard my neighbours Zara & Ash feeding the ducks &, well, you know how much I like the ducks.
Today I had a lecture (one of two all semester!), read my big Disney book, got a big Aardman book & some Norman McLaren DVDs from my advisor (who said, “Cracking dissertation, Gromit!” as I left with the book),...
twenty-five.
Ducks! This is the best thing about living on campus. I want a pet mallard duck - they’re the best.
Today I went to see my dissertation advisor (he’s my favourite lecturer evar) & went to the library & read a big picture book about Disney animation with lots of pictures but also lots of academic content.
twenty-four.
It’s very crisp, cold & clear. The loch on campus is all frozen over but there are big swan tracks on the ice. Kinda cute, non?
twenty-three.
It was literally… okay sometime between 11.55pm and 12.05am & I realised I hadn’t taken a picture. So this is what I was looking at and what was on my mind all day.
twenty-two.
View from my window. High ISO is responsible for the graininess; and I can’t use a flash because it’s snowing! (It’s kind of fun for the time being.) Back in Stirling for my final semester at university. Wey-hey-hey.
twenty-one.
Blah picture for a blah day. I wish my parents would re-decorate; our living room has looked like this since 1993.
Spent the day packing, hanging around the house, and getting groceries to move back up to Stirling. Went to bed at 9pm - still soooo jetlagged.
twenty.
Some things that I haven’t used for the past 6 weeks & am becoming reacquainted with. My friends are all too busy for me so I’ve been sitting around feeling exceptionally lazy, talking to my mum & dad, and drinking lots of cups of tea.
Moving back to Stirling tomorrow! I get the feeling my pictures are going to become infinitely more boring while I’m there....
nineteen.
I missed my cat; dogs just aren’t cuddly like Ozz-bert. Made it home by about 8pm & hung out with the family for a while, it’s unusual for us to be in the same room at any one time.
eighteen.
All packed up and ready to leave on my suddenly-full flight(s) with 3 days’ worth of passengers. I sat behind Mickey Rourke’s long lost sister who reclined all the way back & pushed on the chair so hard I thought the back would snap off. Other fun events include my reading light going out 5 minutes after we were airborne, and being kneed in the back. So paying for an upgrade next...
seventeen.
I was supposed to be at Fresno airport right now, but my flight to London was cancelled. I’m bored. We have nothing to do. Bonus time is not as exciting as you’d expect.
To compensate, I’m being silly.
sixteen.
Tonight was our last night together until… eff knows when. Tomorrow I’ll be leaving on a jet plane; don’t know when I’ll be back again (but July looks likely).
Wish us luck!
fifteen.
Superbowl Sunday! We ate bomb carne asada tacos & kicked back - I took this picture of the guys during the 4th quarter when the 4 of us were the only ones left. I think I was the only one supporting The Steelers. Victoryyyyy!
Bonus picture: Eric’s dog Tank is an absolute tanker of a beast. He has a wicked underbite. Picture fifteen point five:

Blue Moon looks so good, but I just… prefer Dos XX.
UFC 90-something: Our boy Georges St. Pierre manhandled BJ Penn for 20 minutes before they declared TKO. Good times. I am a violent American.
Afterwards, I took pictures of Evan rolling around drunk on the floor, and turnd on the TV to find the men’s final of the Australian Open had begun. At 5AM, after 5 intense sets, we finally...

Current read: Neither Here Nor There by Bill Bryson (isn’t he great?) & Tonight’s film: The Wrestler. It was pretty good. Different. But still not a touch on the other films of late 2008 that I’ve seen in the past few weeks (especially Slumdog!)
Also, Dev Patel was on Leno tonight. He’s a cutie. I really ought to catch up on Skins.
twelve.
I just returned home to realise that I hadn’t taken a photo today. It’s 38 past midnight — how horrid!
We went to see Revolutionary Road and it was fantastic. I love films that are all about the acting. Sam Mendes is such a great director, and Kate & Leo are two of my absolute favourites (although so far not together).
Now, to cheer up, it’s time for Jon Stewart on...
eleven.
Evan’s desk space was so cluttered it was driving me crazy, so I tidied it on a whim. He has a good book collection, it was a shame to see it messy.
Clearly, it’s been an uneventful day.
ten.
I love finding novelty red phoneboxes in the wrong countires. This is in Fresno, by Fresno State. There’s also one in Universal Studios, LA.
I went to school with Evan, did some reading for my dissertation and finished Franny & Zooey. Then we went home and I read Neither Here Nor There Bill Bryson pretty much all night.
nine.
A black bag got caught up under Evan’s car and was making awful noises so we ended up taking the Porsche to Red Robin… lol. You stay classy, Clovis, California. (See what I did there?!)
eight.
Hollister Avenue, Goleta is such a pretty road. I love driving along Hollister, windows down, blasting Sublime. It’s also the location of Cajun Kitchen, which serves an amazing breakfast.
It was sad to leave. I didn’t even go down to the beach because I was afraid to get too upset. Quelle melodramatic!
seven.
We had intended to go to the Film Festival, but ended up having a quiet day wandering around Isla Vista, and then up and down State Street. I got a copy of Word Magazine, which I co-founded last year, and the new team have done a great job.
Back at the hotel we read and watched SNL and infomercials. (Which was so much more fun than it sounds!)
six.
Back in Isla Vista, at last. I missed this place a lot. It was probably the most bittersweet trip I’ve ever taken - everything was exactly how I remembered it, but I no longer belonged. I envy everyone who stays for more than a year.
Freebirds has the best burritos in town.
five.
Between low light, low ISO and a powerful flash, this was a difficult photograph to take.
I got this in my fortune cookie tonight - we’re heading to Santa Barbara tomorrow!
four.
I love to get new books - even when I already have several that I want to read (& many more that I wish to borrow!)
Today the guys came over and started to drink at about 5pm. It was fun nevertheless!
three.
Tomorrow, Evan starts at his new school. Urf urf!
two.
Today, Goo Gone made me smell gross (we took the tint off Evan’s car and it left glue that we had to scrape off with goo gone). Then it was too dark to take a decent photobooth picture, and non-tinted windows just aren’t interesting, now, are they?
Well this sucks. Better luck next time?
one.
This picture is more representative of the first half of my day than anything else. I lazed around reading The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, then I browsed Tumblr for hours before finally getting productive around 9pm. WTG.
Photographs can only get better than this.
